Coach takes a backseat

Coach has always been the top designer here on campus. Granted, Vera Bradley is still in mass circulation, and Longchamp should write a check to whomever jump-started the Le Pliage obsession. But from wristlets and work totes to rain boots and scarves, the just-expensive-enough Coach brand has long ruled the collegiate runway.

Don’t get me wrong — the canvas double “C” patterns are still in full force. And with the new Heritage Collection and an updated logo, they probably will be for some time. But you can’t call yourself an informed shopper (let alone a trendsetter) if you’re willing to spend $300 on a bag your roommate, sister, and Spanish professor already own.

So broaden your vision.  There are lots of fabulous alternatives comparable to Coach and Longchamp in price but more exquisite in brand and style. If you’re going to spend the money anyway, you might as well do a little exploring and give these underrepresented labels some much needed attention on campus. You might not start the next craze, but you’ll definitely win more compliments:

Marc by Marc Jacobs: A less expensive Marc Jacobs line targeted specifically towards young adults. The gorgeous wallets and wristlets and are available in  attractive colors and usually cost around $150. Marc by Marc’s cloth carryall bags are only $88 at Nordstrom stores.

DKNY: Surprisingly, most college females don’t know that DKNY stands for Donna Karan New York. Donna Karan is a classic name in couture, and the NY line makes DK styles more affordable. DKNY accessories are very urban. So if you’re looking to take the Midwest by surprise, invest in an Infinity Scarf or crocodile party clutch.

Lacoste: This preppy label is clean and colorful, and the recognizable alligator logo won’t let your purchase go unnoticed. While commonly identified as a spring and summer brand, Lacoste also carries fall and winter collections. The bags are great for class or hitting the gym, and the sweaters and sneakers make great staples to winter wardrobes.

Nine West: Trust me, it’s not for little old ladies anymore. Not only does Nine West create exceptional footwear, they also feature clutches and shoulder bags.  Not to mention that their sales are genuinely money-saving.  My new turquoise suede pumps?  $32.99. A classic red leather clutch? $49.50.

Happy shopping, all you trendsetters!  Don’t worry — I won’t tell anyone where you found all these great ideas.

You’re Beautiful,

Alise
