Looking for the Lady in Red: Men’s perspective on women’s fashion
Pants are so last year. The newest and latest craze is leggings. Yes, just leggings. Throw in a T-shirt, some Ugg boots and a North Face … and boom, you have the most noticeable and widely discussed clothing ensemble of the year.
Current college fashion finds students are leaving their high school clothing trends behind for more sophisticated and savvy styles. On their way to the professionalism of the college graduate and job-holder, students are met with a whirlwind of fashion trends that have a lot of us asking, “What is she wearing?!”
Let’s start with the leggings. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, a legging is a “covering for the leg.” But according to Urban Dictionary, where I go to define the majority of miscellaneous words I hear on a day-to-day basis, leggings are defined as: “definitely not pants.”
But really, did it take Urban Dictionary to tell us that?
Jake Albers, a freshman in the College of Arts & Sciences, agrees with the varied response over females who wear leggings instead of pants.
“Many guys think that it’s weird, but it really depends who wears them,” Albers said, in reference to the body type of the female wearing the leggings.
Girls, it’s all about wearing clothes that look the best on you, and you only. Yes, the high fashion models on designer runways are rockin’ the fitted, skin-tight, leather pants and corset. And yes, it looks great on them. But it doesn’t mean it will look great on you, too.
“You have to wear clothes that complement,” said Matt Teske, a sophomore in the College of Business Administration.
If your body type lets you wear such clothing, then by all means, throw on some tight pants and a cute, fitted shirt. But if your body type puts you under the “more to love” category, something tight-fitted is just going to make you look worse. There are more appealing and more flattering clothes made just for your body type. I would suggest you head to your nearest Gap, J.Crew or Banana Republic, stores that carry sizes extra small to extra large. There you can dress fashionably and respectably without making a fool of yourself.
Now, what about that other fashion trend that never ceases to go away? The one that has girls dressed in what they call a shirt, but what the rest of us call a piece of fabric. We saw it in middle school when girls began hitting puberty, and we saw it in high school when girls thought boys were the best things since sliced bread. And we see it now on Friday and Saturday nights when girls head out for some weekend fun.
Albers said over-revealing clothes do not attract guys, but rather make them lose some respect for the girl wearing them. “It’s a complete turnoff for most guys,” he said.
So what clothes do guys prefer to see girls in?
C.J. Cannon, a senior in the College of Education, likes females to wear “something professional, like nice pants or jeans and a nice sweater.”
“I love girls who wear a variety of clothing so they can stand out. You can tell how she carries herself or her personality through clothing. I give those women a lot more respect,” Cannon said.
And what about clothing colors? Cosmopolitan Magazine says guys are most attracted to girls wearing the color red.
“I would agree with the color red as well as black. They are flashy and grab your attention,” said Mike LoCicero, a sophomore in the College of Communication.
“As far as color schemes, I leave that to girls. They are better at matching than guys are,” Albers said.
